KILMARNOCK HEAD
History
In 1760, James Boyd of Scotland set sail for America to sell goods for his older brother. He first settled on Indian Island in the Passamaquoddy Bay where he built a trading house, the first framed house in the region at that time. In fact, the closest European settlement to Boyd’s location in 1760 was in Machias, Maine.
In 1767, James Boyd went to Halifax and applied for a land grant for the settlement of 50 families on the land to the east of the Scodick River. In the same year, James Boyd was appointed Justice of the Peace for a district in New Brunswick that ranged from Saint John to the most westerly boundary of the province.
On March 28th of 1767, James Boyd was granted 1000 acres of land in Bobabec. Twenty-six families consisting of 125 persons settled on the land reserve in Bocabec. Boyd named the rocky headland of this granted land, Kilmarnock Head, in honor of his native home in the county of Ayre, in western Scotland.
A settlement was never established on the headland and for centuries the natural habitat for wildlife and fauna on Kilmarnock Head has been retained in its pristine state and is home to several nesting sites for ospreys and eagles.
