Property Description
24 Augustus St..
Offered at: $395,000 CDN
This beautifully maintained and charming Cape Cod, built C1840,
is a home which while comfortable and up-to-date, is steeped
in history. The land upon which the house was built was granted
to William Stewart, a blacksmith, in 1784 - the year the Loyalists
arrived in St. Andrews. The present house was built by James
Starkey nearly sixty-two years later. Many of the original features
still grace this beautiful home: hard and soft wood floors,
deep molding around windows and doors, hardware, the six over
six windows and wood wainscoting.
It has been faithfully restored, keeping all the charm while
vanishing old wiring and roofs, out of date kitchen and bathrooms
and drafts. The house is surprisingly open, full of light and
full height ceilings. There are two entries into the home; the
original front gable end entrance via a small enclosed porch,
and an informal entrance via the covered veranda into the new
addition. A door is being added in the main hall which will
lead to the new deck at the back of the house.
The front hall opens to the large, bright livingroom with its
river rock fireplace and the adjacent formal dining room, both
with the original pine floors. The kitchen is accessed by both
the hall and dining room. The kitchen is spacious, has tiled
floors, hand-crafted ash cupboards with stain glass doors, and
tongue and grove cottage style ceiling. All original doors and
windows have been stripped down to the bare wood and have great
patina.
The new addition includes a rear mud room with Mexican paver
tiled floor, spacious main floor bedroom or family room with
hardwood floor and large bath with wood wainscoting, built in
shelving, stain glass, stacking washer and dryer and large custom
tiled shower. There is also a convenient built in pantry on
the landing leading to the well-insulated basement.
At the top of the curved stair case, is a large music room
with double closets; this room, like all the rooms in the house
have been freshly painted. The full bath features the original
sink and claw foot tub with remarkable hand laid mosaic floor
with thousands of individual tiles. The guest bedroom, the bath
and the music room all have large dormers giving each room added
space and light.
The Master bedroom features stripped pine floors and great views
of St. Andrews Harbour. Off this room, also with wonderful water
views are a large library/office and a separate hobby room.
This house is charming outside as well as in. While compact,
the property has been developed with ease of care, style and
enjoyment in mind. The drive leads directly to the covered veranda,
informal entrance and mud room. There is a brick patio, well
screened from the street by flowering shrubs. The property is
partially fenced for further privacy. There are well establish
perennial beds and a handsome garden shed. At the back of the
house is a new deck which affords a lovely view of the Harbour
and Navy Island.
Other features included: the home has been freshly shingled,
there is a new furnace and roof and has a new electrical system
throughout.
