Property Description: Offered at: $395,000 CDN Designed and built by a well-known master builder in the early 1940s, this charming one bedroom cottage has been fully winterized, up-dated and beautifully decorated while retaining all of its original design features. Craftsman Stewart Anderson was responsible for building many cottages for Canadian airmen in training during the early years of the Second World War. This home was one of the few of this design that he built off base and placed on a full foundation. In honour of its builder, the cottage has always been known as “Anderson Cottage”. Located in Bayside, just minutes from historic St. Andrews, it sits on 15 of the prettiest waterfront acreage in the province. Gently sloping from Route 127 to the tidal St. Croix River, the property consists of well-maintained fenced pasture with open cow shed, a 49' X 21' functioning green house equipped with raised beds, fan and electrical and water supply, several large organic vegetable, herb and flower garden plots, and a 18' X 20' storage shed/barn. A groomed cedar hedge offers privacy between the greenhouse and gardens and the cottage beyond. A circular gravel drive gives easy access to the cottage as well as ample parking. Flag-stone paths lead from the drive to both the kitchen and the more formal front doors. The covered verandah is edged with perennial plants and shrubbery. A gate allows access to an approx. 3000 sq. ft., wrap-around, multi-level deck, perfect for entertaining. Shade trees, awnings and screened gazebo extends the use of this space to a variety of weather conditions. These decks are within a large one and a half-acre fenced portion of the property, ideal for keeping family pets from wandering too far, while giving them plenty of space to play. A small brook runs the entire length of the property, this along with a fish pond built into the deck, adds the music of running water to this magical space. The cedar shakes, the sloped metal roof that extends over the verandah, the smaller panes which make up the upper portion of the cottage’s many windows all add to the home’s considerable charm. Inside, the home does not disappoint. It extends that same charm while adding warmth with a touch of whimsy. Hardwood floors throughout, vaulted ceilings in the living room, bedroom, kitchen and bath with exposed beams in the living room give a sense of spaciousness to this 800 square foot home. The higher than usual walls, lend themselves to a unique gallery space and the high pitch of the ceilings allow for dramatic light fixtures, sky lights, and a wrought-iron unit upon which to store and display pots and pans in the kitchen. The galley-style kitchen with its center island fitted with deep ceramic sink and dishwasher, is small enough to be efficient and large enough to welcome guests when preparing for a dinner party. Sturdy metal stools, reminiscent of those seen at the soda fountain of your local drug store many years ago, are bolted to the floor in front of an eating counter over which is a window which affords wonderful views of the hardwood forest and the water beyond. The hardwood kitchen floor has been meticulously painted a plaid design in various shades of blues. This burst of color blends beautifully with the decorator colors seen throughout the home. The kitchen also features wine storage, built-in ice maker and cottage-style tongue and grove cupboard faces Anderson Cottage has what many much larger are homes is missing - separate dining room. This beautiful room is full of light from its eight windows - all of which overlook the wrap-around deck. A door conveniently opens from the dining room to the deck, allowing for easy inside/outside entertaining. It can be closed off from the rest of the house by double French doors. The dining room, like the deck, enjoys great water views. Wainscoting is featured in the majority of the cottage’s rooms, including the delightful bedroom with its high pitched ceiling, sky light and painted floor. The wainscoting in the bath is particularly high and is painted white to give an added freshness to the room along with the white, high quality fixtures including a deluxe pedestal sink, deep soaker tub and pull-chain flush. The living room is truly the heart of this cottage and opens to every room, yet it is a place to sit and linger. Its vaulted ceilings are pine covered and the beams are exposed. Because of its height, a truly remarkable wrought-iron chandelier has been hung without in the least overwhelming the room. The formal entry off the living room also sports wainscoting and has two built in closets.
When the home was renovated in 1994/95 all the wiring and plumbing where replaced, as was the roof. A new well was also drilled at that time. A roof-top deck was added affording the home with its most spectacular views. This 15-acre property, with approximately 60' of water frontage, is rare in today’s market. Give yourself the pleasure of viewing it today.
