Property Description

Tara Manor Inn, St. Andrews, New Brunswick

Offered at: $1,750,000

Tara Manor Inn or “Tara” as it is known locally, is a working, fully equipped vacation resort located in historic St. Andrews by-the-Sea. Beautifully situated atop a gently sloping 15.4-acre property, many of the inn’s 28 suites, balconies, decks and dining room are afforded stunning views of Passamaquoddy Bay and Navy Island. Since the early 1970s, Tara has been a popular vacation destination for couples seeking a private and relaxing getaway, for families wanting to enjoy an abundance of walking paths, the tennis court, hot tub and heat outdoor pool, and for companies wanting to host business conferences in a unique and convenient setting.

The current owners, who have owned Tara for more than 40 years, are proud of its illustrious history. Built is 1869 as a summer residence, “Belle Vu”, as it was known then, was owned by Sir Charles Tupper, one of Canada’s Father’s of Confederation. Sir Charles Tupper was a distinguished physician who was instrumental in leading Nova Scotia into Confederation in 1867. He had been Premier of Nova Scotia from 1864-67; following Canada’s establishment as a Dominion, Sir Charles was elected to the House of Commons in Ottawa where he served as a Cabinet Minister under Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald from 1870 - 1873 and 1878 - 1884. There have only been five other owners in its long history and they include Professor D. Blakeney Hoar for whom Blakeney Hoar Square in Boston , Massachusetts was named and the Rt. Honourable C.D. Howe, a leading Canadian economist and Cabinet Minister.

The current owners purchased the property in 1965 and continue using it as a private residence until its conversion into an Inn in 1971. The suites, all with full private ensuites, are comfortably appointed with mahogany furniture, custom-made drapery and area rugs. The main building has large dining room, fireside lounge for guests, meeting room, kitchen, pantry, storage room, laundry and office. The family’s home is located in the inn with includes a large master bedroom, three other bedrooms, two baths, living area and kitchen. There is also a separate two-bedroom bungalow for staff, as well as a green house on site.

The business is located on approximately six acres with the remaining nearly 10 acres open for development opportunity. The property is beautifully landscaped with mature hedges and trees, formal perennial gardens and flowering shrubs. There is a well-cared for gravel drive with ample parking for over night and dinner guests. All furnishings and kitchen and dining room equipment are included in the sale.
